Cold Weather Dog Houses
There are many kinds of dog houses available. If you live in a cold climate or have frosty winters you should know about cold weather dog houses. There are dog houses made for cold climates and dog houses that can be updated for the winter season. First, evaluate your climate to discover what your dog needs. In some cases, central heating should be installed. This is especially the case for kennel owners who house multiple dogs in one indoor area.
If installing central heating in your dog's house is not in your budget, consider a heat box or other type of heater made for dog houses. These appliances safely heat the inside of your dog's house without making it too hot or cold. You want to use a heater that is made specifically for dog houses because those made for interior home use can be a fire hazard if placed in a dog house. Read all packaging instructions and follow all precautions when heating a dog house in this manner.
Some dog houses are fine with only a heated mat or bed. If your dog spends only a limited amount of time outdoors, a heated kennel pad is ideal for when they are in their house. There are also heated beds that are cushiony and warm. Your best bet is to shop around and think about what would best fit your dog house and what your dog would best enjoy. If you are buying a new doghouse you don't want it to be too big because heat stays more easily enclosed in small spaces. Of course there should be enough room for your dog to stand up and walk around in a circle.
You can learn how to winterize your existing dog house and how to shop for a new one, if that is what you need. There is a great deal of information online as well as plenty of products for all climates and all pets. You may also want to to talk to your veterinarian about the best way to heat your dog's dwelling. Your vet can advise you on the best heating methods and the best type of outdoor home for your dog.
